Keswick may not be an exotic faraway destination for a Cumberland Fellrunner but it proved to be a great location for thirteen members (including partners) this weekend.
I met Dave Morgan and Steve Watson on the bridge by the hostel in Keswick. We were soon joined by, Kate and Andy Beaty, Harry and Mary Jarrett and Phil Hawley. As we ran up Skiddaw we met Mike Litt on his way down warning that it was feeezing on the summit despite the sunshine. There are some inspirational runners around (Mike with his repeated foot surgery is still running up 3000 foot mountains and so is Steve Watson at nearly 70) .
The party split with half doing a tour of Lonscale fell and another group heading up to Skiddaw House to be rewarded and refreshed with water, biscuits and jelly babies by Heather. Then it was over the top, over Little Man and back for lunch at the hostel. Kate thinks a weekend at Skiddaw House would be good. I agree. Any takers?
The afternoon found us playing Boules by the lake with Mary taking an early lead and showing off some considerable talent. The excitement was too much and so with the background music of the Keswick Jazz Festival we sat and soaked up some sun not to mention some wine, beer, bread and cheese.
It was good to see Roger Whittaker and Amanda joining us in the evening for a very good Pizza. The red wine was good too not to mention the enormous jugs of beer and even more beer later at The Queens.
Sunday started with a walk and a short run. Then a superb breakfast. It turned out almost everyone had brought a bike so whilst Heather and Mary took a walk around the lake the rest of us cycled to Langdale in sunshine with a following wind stopping for a coffee in Ambleside before dispersing back at the hostel.
Cheers! And here’s to the next one.
